The lure of Progressive
Slots is often too hard to ignore once inside
the casino. The fantasy of the big win just
doesn’t go away that easily even if you know
that the chances of winning at progressive
slots is slightly less than your chance of
being hit by a lightning bolt. Nevertheless,
the draw is there and it’s hard to walk away.
Does that mean that progressive slots have
to become a problem?
They won’t be a problem if you understand
that the odds of winning are enormous and
you remember to keep your expectations realistic.
With that in mind, you should be safe trying
out a slot or two. Besides, some progressive
machines offer better jackpots than others
and you never know when you just might hit
the big one.
The huge progressive jackpots you see in
the casinos are the accumulation of a percentage
of all the money played in the machine by
a succession of players over a certain amount
of time. Consequently, the jackpot is growing
continuously as people play the machine until
someone finally hits the winning jackpot
symbols.
With progressive slot machines, a percentage
of the coins played go towards the progressive
jackpot resulting in a regular payback percentage
that is less than on other winning symbols.
In some cases the payback percentage on the
Progressive machines may even be less than
other machines in the casino. This holds
true for the progressive slot machines that
offer the really substantial, ‘life-changing’
jackpots. Not all progressive slot machines
are the same, however. There are basically
three different types.
The Stand-Alone Progressive
This machine, as the name implies, is not
linked to any other machine. It has no fixed
jackpot and instead takes a percentage of
all the coins played into it and adds that
to the award for the highest winning combination.
You can follow the value of the jackpot rising
while you play, by watching a meter displayed
on the front of the machine for that purpose.
Usually, the payback is equal to the other
machines of the same denomination, but it
is distributed differently to give a varying
amount for the top prize. The progressive
jackpots on stand-alone machines are lower
than the jackpots of machines that are linked
together.
The In-House or Proprietary Progressives
This type of progressive slot machine is
linked in a group with other progressive
slot machines in the casino. Depending upon
the gaming company operating the machines,
they can be linked together with slot machines
in the same casino or with machines in other
casinos. The jackpot in the linked slot machines
comes from a percentage of the money played
in all of the linked machines. While jackpots
in these machines may not run into the millions,
they can still be substantial. Jackpots with
in-house machines typically are hit more
often than jackpots in wide-area progressive
machines.
Wide-Area Progressive Slot Machines
These are the machines to play for the ‘life-altering’
jackpots. They are linked together with machines
from many different unrelated casinos and
are operated by an independent operator.
IGT slot maker, for example, operates games
such as MegaBucks, Quatermania and others
in different States. With these machines,
the casinos share in a percentage of the
winnings but it is the operator who owns
the game. While their jackpots may be very
large, so are the odds of hitting their jackpots.
Also, the payback percentage on these machines
is much lower than on other slots because
of the operating costs of linking all of
the machines together. Stand-Alones and In-House
progressives offer a higher chance of winning
than do Wide-Area progressives.
Just remember, if you want to give the progressive
slots a try, make sure that you set aside a
portion of your bankroll to play and don’t
go beyond that set amount. Keep in mind too,
that your chances of winning are slim and that
slot machines are for entertainment not for
striking it rich. |
